Project Types

New Partner

Listed below are descriptions of our four types of volunteer projects, which include HandsOn Team Led projects, Calendar Referrals, Ongoing Referrals, and BoardLink opportunities.  See pages 5-7 of the HandsOn Partner Agency Guide for a complete list of roles and responsibilities related to each type of project.

HandsOn Team Led Projects

These projects are listed on our online Project Calendar on specific dates and are facilitated by HandsOn Team Leaders (trained volunteer leaders) working in conjunction with your agency. Please contact us directly at volunteer@handsongr.org or give us a call at (804) 330-7400 ext. 132 if you would like to set up a HandsOn Team Led project.

Criteria:

  • Done-in-a-day (usually 2-6 hours), can be monthly offerings
  • Group-based (minimum of 5 volunteers)
  • Takes place during evenings or weekends
  • Created at least 4-6 weeks prior to the project date
  • Activities directly serve your mission and communities in the City of Richmond and/or Henrico or Chesterfield counties.
  • No advance training required
  • Representative from your agency is present throughout the service project
  • Any needed volunteer supplies are provided by your agency
  • Wrap-up reflection at project’s end, led by a HandsOn Team Leader

Calendar Referral Projects (Email Sign-Ups, Specific Date)

These volunteer opportunities are listed on our project calendar on specific dates that you choose. Volunteers don’t register for your opportunity on our web site, but they do learn about the opportunity and can click on a link that sends you an email stating that they want to talk to you directly.

Criteria:

  • Date-specific projects
  • Do NOT need a Team Leader (trained volunteer leader)
  • Done-in-a-day projects (usually 2-6 hours), can be monthly offerings
  • Can require specialized skills
  • Activities directly serve your mission
  • May require as few as 1 volunteer to complete the work
  • Your agency can request volunteers to undergo a background check (HandOn does not perform background checks.)
  • Your agency may post a maximum of 8 Calendar Referral projects per month

Ongoing Referrals (Email Sign-Ups, Ongoing)

Some agencies have ongoing needs for volunteers (ex: a grant writer; a tutor or mentor…). Because the call is open ended, it doesn’t have a specific date of occurrence. These opportunities are listed on a separate page from the project calendar as “Ongoing or Skill-Based Needs.” Volunteers can click on a link that will send your agency an email that they are interested in working with you.

Criteria:

  • Volunteer positions requiring long-term or ongoing commitment
  • Projects that don’t need a Team Leader
  • Positions calling for specialized skills
  • Requests for single volunteers (as opposed to group projects)
  • May require as few as 1 volunteer to complete the work
  • Your Agency can request volunteers to undergo advanced training or a background checks (HandsOn does not perform background checks.)

BoardLink (Email Sign-Ups, Ongoing)

BoardLink postings announce opportunities for individuals to serve on your agency’s board or committees. They require the same criteria as an “Ongoing Referral” (above), but listings are only viewable by individuals that have completed our board training workshops. We recommend that you treat a BoardLink posting as a professional job posting, giving details about skills and potential time-commitments. You can find more information, as well as a BoardLink guide, on our BoardLink page.
